The Home & Communities Agency (HCA), who own the land on which RAF Oakington is situated have agreed to preserve 8 buildings as a Heritage core for the new development of Northstowe. Once the new town is built, space in one of the buildings (hopefully the Officer's Mess) will be allocated to the Longstanton & District Heritage Society (LDHS) as a museum for artefacts and memorabilia for Longstanton and RAF Oakington.

This agreement was obtained due to the lobbying by the Heritage Society and the well-supported petition they organised. This agreement by the HCA unfortunately does not guarantee that in the future of these buildings will survive once they are sold by the HCA. Representations to get legal covenants included in any sale arrangements, to ensure their protection, are being actively pursued as listed building status was refused by English Heritage.

You can help the cause by becoming a member of the LDHS and can do so by visiting their website or, if you are not technically capable, contact the Association secretary for information. The continued success of the intended museum could depend on membership by 7 Squadron Association members to LDHS even if you are unable to take part in any of the activities they organise.
